Olivia was joy in human form. She loved life and all her people. She worried about friends with hurt feelings and she wrote notes to brighten everyone’s day. She was fun-loving, spunky and laughed easily. She loved rainbows, unicorns, mermaids and dresses as much as wrestling with her brother and playing tackle football with her dad.
On January 17, 2022, we heard the phrase every parent fears, “your daughter has Leukemia”. Her case was extremely rare – “Your daughter is the 1%”, the doctors said. Three days after Olivia’s diagnosis, cancer took her away. It was swift and brutal.
Our world was turned upside down. Olivia left such a big hole that it seemed impossible to dig out of – that is, until we started finding encouraging and loving handwritten notes, texts messages, and numerous hilarious videos she created. She was such a positive force that we needed to share what a bright light she was with the world.
Finding adequate grief support that met the needs of our family was a challenge, to say the least. Hearing our son express the simple, yet profound desire to “feel understood,” only added to the complexity. We encountered lengthy wait lists, seasonal programs, and a scarcity of grief resources within our community and so, we started the Olivia Chan Foundation to help others in their time of grief, to honor those we’ve lost and to assist families in their journey toward healing that last a lifetime.
The mission of the Olivia Chan Foundation is to provide grief support in a safe place where children, teens, young adults and their families can share their experiences through peer facilitated activities in hopes that one day they can rediscover moments of happiness.
We are fundraising for a permanent facility, which will require $50,000.
$5,000 will cover grief training and grief symposiums - where we will learn the latest developments and research in children and teens who are grieving; enhance skills and knowledge to deliver state-of-the-art services to these children and adolescents; engage with other grief support professionals to exchange ideas information, and clinical expertise.
$2,000 for background checks, general and professional liability insurance, and administrative costs.
$500 for operational needs such as a website, e-commerce, digital material, print materials, craft and art supplies for grief related activities.
$250 print materials for tabling events where we get invited to speak about our program
$100 materials for posters, leaflets, events
Any amount will greatly enhance our efforts to help other children to better deal with tragedies and how to get life back on track.
Traditional support options for grief often come with financial barriers and limited accessibility.
