The Sacramento Youth Band (SYB) is a non-profit organization that consists of a Symphonic/Parade Band, a Concert Band, a Big Band and Jazz Combos! SYB has been educating and inspiring young musicians in the Sacramento area since 1957. It provides them with a place to meet new friends, expand their musical abilities, and travel to exciting places like San Francisco, Santa Cruz, Santa Barbara, and more!
The Symphonic Band has been a fixture in the Sacramento area since 1957, providing a positive experience for young musicians in the capital city. The band practices and performs a diverse selection of music, covering literature from various areas including standard wind band literature, marches, contemporary compositions, entertainment medleys, and orchestral transcriptions for wind band. The band welcomes young musicians with 2 or more years' experience to any rehearsal. Come sit in and see what it’s like! (Yes, you may bring your instrument!)
The Sacramento Youth Band currently operates a variety of jazz ensembles. The River City Swingers Big Band and Tower Bridge Trad Combos rehearse year-round on Sundays! The bands study a variety of jazz styles including Bebop, Big-Band Swing, Latin Jazz, Funk, Blues, and Traditional Jazz while preparing for performances around the Sacramento area (jazz festivals, jazz venues, fairs, private events). Instruments include saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, bass, guitar, drums, and vocals.
Provide high quality music instruction and performance opportunities to musicians from all backgrounds and abilities, regardless of financial means
Like most performing arts groups, SYB was especially impacted by the pandemic. Our students lost several years of learning and performance opportunities and all our programs were forced to shut down. We are struggling to bring our membership levels back to pre-pandemic levels and are working very hard to continue to provide an excellent music experience at low or no cost to young musicians.
We are in great need of new young musicians and performance venues. Come sit in on a rehearsal or contact us to perform at your festival or parade!
We always welcome donations of working condition musical instruments.
Currently our other major needs include purchasing music stand storage racks, updated outreach fliers, replacement and repair of parade uniforms, and travel expenses for parades and performances.
During the pandemic we also lost the use of the free, indoor storage facility that we had used for many years. As a result, we were forced to find and pay for a storage facility for our uniforms and musical instruments. This is a large and unexpected on-going expense.
