$20,000 Goal

With an emphasis on education and leadership development, our purpose directs the Foundation to build a pipeline of support for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults aimed at raising and improving civic engagement. Founded by Sam Catalano, the nonprofit launched in 2017 with a flagship scholarship at Sacramento State University, named for longtime LGBTQ+ activist Laurie McBride. Additionally, in 2020 the Foundation launched a new scholarship, the Sam Catalano Scholarships for Los Rios Community College District campuses. In seven short years, we expanded support to give more than $70,000 to college students, fund school district leadership development, and provide for paid student internships, prominently awarding students with diverse and indigenous backgrounds.

The Foundation continues to expand several programs to create pathways to future leadership across the Sacramento region. Since its inception these achievements have included:

- Funding thirteen total CSUS undergraduate students through our flagship Laurie McBride Memorial Scholarship.

- Funding eight total Los Rios Community College students through the Sam Catalano Scholarship.

- Sponsoring three years of the Be Brave, Be You LGBTQ+ student leadership conferences in the Sacramento City Unified School District; the PRIDE PAK education conference at the San Juan Unified School District, and the Elk Grove Unified School District's Stars Student Summit.

- Convening roundtables of educators to discuss challenges LGBTQ youth face and best practices to support them in Sacramento schools.

- Funding paid internships at the Sacramento LGBT Community Center, lending experience with delivery of social services and community outreach.

- Funded four interns in partnership with Sunburst Projects to expand mental health services to the LGBTQ community.

- Funding two years of direct support to individuals through our Black History Month Direct Support Fund to those in college, university, or trade schools in the Greater Sacramento Region.

And more!

The Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento is committed to extending support to LGBTQ youth and young adults in pursuit of equity for all.

Mission

The Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento fosters leadership and supports high school and college students in the Sacramento region who will be the next generation of leaders advancing equity and representation in the LGBTQ+ community. The Foundation accomplishes this through scholarships, fostering collaboration between Sacramento schools to better support LGBTQ+ students, and partnering with local entities to expand mental health services available to youth.

Needs

In 2024 the Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento will fund a total of four scholarships - two Laurie McBride scholarships for Sacramento State University and two Sam Catalano scholarships for Los Rios Community College.

The purpose of the Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento is to build a pipeline of support for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults aimed at developing civic engagement and leadership that lead to equity for all. As we engage in work with and for our community, timely communication and delivery of meaningful content about our efforts to our donors and the general public is vital to our success.

Committed members of the board of directors of an organization with a clear mission are key to ongoing success, resource development and judicious use of its time, talent and treasure. The Stonewall Foundation has been fortunate to have been led by a small, but dedicated team. However, because Sacramento communities hold such a richness in diversity, the Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento seeks to improve diversity of our board to be more reflective of our LGBTQ+ community to broaden our networks, perspectives and organizational offerings. As we move into our eighth year as a foundation, we seek funds to consult with strategic planning professionals and increase board member training opportunities.
