Needs
A donation to support our programs provides basic needs (support services, meals, move-in needs, transit support, emergency support and life guidance, as well as assistance in maneuvering through government systems), employment training and enrichment opportunities. Each resident contributes toward their rent, but given their limited income, there is not much left for basic needs or enrichment opportunities.
Donations from Big Day of Giving support the health and stability of individuals and families in all our programs, based on where the need is greatest. Needs can include:
1) Participant assistance with emergencies such as auto repairs, medical bills, baby needs, food, utility bills
2) Addressing participant's special needs such as clothing for a job interview or uniforms for a job
3) Replacing program equipment or purchasing supplies for therapeutic and educational programs, including art, music, nutrition, cooking and independent living skills
4) Funding for specialized employment training, such as internships, technical programs and mentoring, particularly for youth. These young adults, aged 18-24, need considerable guidance and support in exploring career options and then learning basic soft skills so vital to landing and keeping that first job: communication, working with others, maintaining a schedule and interviewing.
5) Providing enrichment opportunities to broaden our participants' perspectives and encourage them to create a vision for their future. Generational poverty is common among the adults and youth we serve. Many have never had a library card, visited a museum, attended a theater or dance performance, attended a professional sporting event or hiked in a regional park. Our staff also organizes art, music and creative writing classes that allow participants to explore their creative abilities and express their emotions.
Additionally, LSS has year-round volunteer opportunities, from one-time projects to on-going needs, throughout its region. Many volunteer activities are hands-on, such as tutoring and mentoring, and others are conceptual/strategic, such as planning. Please contact us at Volunteers@lssnorcal.org for more information.
