Child Action, Inc. (CAI) is a private, non-profit corporation founded in 1976 to promote the education and social welfare of children and families and to advocate on their behalf. Our programs include resource and referral services for families seeking childcare, childcare subsidies for qualifying families, recruitment and professional development of the childcare workforce, and family education and support.
Our goal is to partner with families and assist them in the care and education of their children and to advocate beside them in support of their concerns.
Our three primary services offered to our community include:
1. Helping families find childcare. We offer free childcare referrals to all families living or working in Sacramento County. In 2021-22, Child Action provided childcare referrals to 7,450 families for 10,800 children.
2. Helping families pay for childcare. We are Sacramento County's largest childcare subsidy program and enroll income eligible families so they can work or go to school or training. Last year, more than 6,110 families received subsidies for 11,000 children through Child Action. The median household income of Child Action subsidy recipients is only $31,500.
3. Supporting our childcare community. We offer workshops and individualized assistance for Sacramento County's childcare providers, supporting them through the licensing process and as they operate their small businesses. In 2021-2022, our team helped create an additional 763 child care spaces.
Relationships form the foundation of all our interactions. We strive to offer a whole family approach so that we can learn more about the challenges each family faces. We stay current on community resources and are able to link our clients to other agencies to receive the supports they need.
