The Lincoln Woman's Club was formed in 1911 by a group of women supporting the growing suffrage movement in the country. California women received the right to vote that year, so the group evolved into the Lincoln Improvement Club. The first major project was addressing the growing sanitation problems in Lincoln. The Club organized the first "Clean-Up Day" in town, a tradition carried on for many years. In 1912 the local group joined the State Federation of Woman's Clubs and at that time became the Woman's Club Of Lincoln.
As the Club grew, they appealed to the community to help them build a clubhouse. Many fundraisers were held, and Carrie Gladding donated the last funds needed for construction. She became known as the "fairy godmother". In the latter part of 1923 a clubhouse was started and was completed in January of 1924. The club thanked the community by hosting a Mardi Gras Party in their new clubhouse. The Woman's Club of Lincoln held its first meeting in the new building on April 8th 1924, and is still going strong.
Today, club members have owned and maintained the clubhouse for over 100 years. Many organizations, schools and private parties rent it for functions that range from weddings, receptions, baby showers, celebrations of life, church services, and business meetings. The Rotary Club has met in the clubhouse since the mid- 1920's. In 2000, our clubhouse was added to the Registry of Historical Places.
With the rapid growth of Lincoln, we find ourselves outgrowing the current clubhouse. We have decided to create a larger building on the property next to our historic building and are appealing to the community once again to assist us in this venture. We want this new building to become a community meeting place.
Our budget for the new building is $1,000,000. We have raised seed money through generous donations by individuals, small businesses and Astound Business Solutions. Additional fundraisers are planned including a Masquerade Ball as our first big event in March. We are appealing to the community through Big Day of Giving to help us maintain the current building and keep this new project moving forward.
