The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) was born out of a family's grief following the death of their teenage son. Robert Roesler de Villiers, son of a well-to-do New York family, was only 16 when he quickly succumbed to leukemia in 1944. Five years later, the Robert Roesler de Villiers Foundation was born. Driven by the de Villiers' nearly boundless belief that leukemia and other blood cancers were indeed curable, the Foundation grew steadily, opening its first chapters in the New York City area. The organization was renamed The Leukemia Society of America in the 1960's to communicate a broad, national reach. LLS is the world's largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer. LLS funds lifesaving blood cancer research around the world and provides free information and support services. Our Key Priorities will ensure that: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society helps blood cancer patients live better, longer lives.

Research
- Advance the diagnosis and treatment of blood cancers.
- Proactively establish a research agenda and direct a portion of research spending to specific areas of unmet medical need.

- Inform blood cancer patients and improve access to the latest therapy and clinical trials.
- Be the key source of information and services.

- Ensure patients have insurance coverage.

Mission

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is the world's largest voluntary health organization dedicated to funding blood cancer research and providing education and patient services.

Founded in 1949, we are relentless in pursuit of our mission: Cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.

Our Giving Promise:

At LLS, we believe....

Giving is personal: Contributions don't come from the wallet - they come from the heart. We respect how deeply our donors feel about what we do and why we do it.

Giving is community: A shared passion for change unites us. No matter where we live or who we are, we are together as one for a common cause.

Giving is good: Our donors believe in sharing their resource willingly for the good of all, not just themselves.

Giving is honest: We are always open about how, why, where, and when we use your contributions.

Giving is impact: We strive to make a meaningful difference in the lives of those around us and for those we may never meet.

Thank you for giving: Your generosity makes our work possible, and we promise to uphold your trust in us.

Needs

Financial Assistance: The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's (LLS) Susan Lang Pay-It-Forward Patient Assistance program is available to blood cancer patients, with significant financial need, who may qualify to receive financial assistance for approved expenses which include ground transportation (gas, tolls, car rental, taxi, bus, train, ambulance services, etc.), air travel, and lodging related expenses. Support for this program is based on the availability of funds by disease diagnosis. Funds are available for the following:

- General Fund

- Myeloma Fund

- Pediatric Fund

- Patient Support Fund

Through our Beat AML initiative, LLS is fostering collaboration among researchers at multiple institutions, regulators, pharmaceutical and biotechnology companies, primary healthcare physicians and patients, to develop effective, individualized therapies to treat patients with AML. There are currently more than 100 therapeutic agents being studied for AML, which remains one of the most lethal blood cancers. Key areas of research are focused on targeting the different mechanisms that cause the disease, and among these are stem cell research, studying the cancer micro-environment, and harnessing the immune system.

LLS volunteers are our heart and soul; without you we wouldn't have the same impact. LLS volunteers help in so many ways - supporting patients, advocating for better access to treatments, making our fundraising efforts both fun and effective, and always setting the standard they set for compassion and kindness. Join us as a volunteer and join the cause that's having the most impact on finding new ways to fight cancer - not someday, but today.

There are many ways to volunteer; one of them will be right for you:

- Volunteer once a week, once a month or once in a while! You can volunteer for as few or as many hours as you'd like.

- We can match volunteer assignments to your capabilities, interests, talents and strengths.

- We can help train you if you'd like to learn a new skill.

- You can join our internship program and gain a professional reference for future jobs or graduate study.

Equity Statement

At the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS), advocacy is in our blood. We are a vibrant community of researchers, volunteers, philanthropists, advocates, healthcare professionals, and nonprofit leaders.

Each day, we fight to find cures for blood cancers and help every patient access the care they need to survive and thrive. We believe our individual backgrounds, identities, abilities, and experiences are our greatest sources of creativity and innovation as we work together to create a more equitable world without blood cancer.

OUR POSITION

We stand for equal treatment, equal opportunities, and equal rights for Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC), people with disabilities, Hispanics and Latino/a/x, members of the LGBTQIA+ community, veterans, women, and other underrepresented groups.

OUR WORK

Together, we are working tirelessly to create pathways for equity for our staff, our volunteers, and our communities, while driving forward change that honors our mission and stands against systemic racism and injustice in all its forms. We are determined to break down barriers and address the needs of underserved populations. To date, we have pioneered advances in treatment that stem from a diverse ecosystem. By bringing together different perspectives, backgrounds, and thinking, we are fueling innovative breakthroughs that are a life force for blood cancer patients and their families who deserve to receive the best care and support possible.

OUR CULTURE

At LLS, it is important that our teams reflect the communities we serve. We are dedicated to fostering an inclusive workplace where everyone feels welcome, seen, and heard. We grow stronger when we embrace and learn from our differences. At the same time, we recognize that our shared identities unite us, creating a sense of belonging.

OUR COMMITMENT

We believe in continuous improvement, and we know we have more to do. As the global leader in the fight to end blood cancers, finding cures for all people impacted by these diseases is in our DNA. We will continue to educate ourselves, engage in difficult conversations, and hold ourselves and each other accountable.
