The Student Emergency Grant program is an important initiative that was started in early 2014 for students, by students.  The first phase of creating the program was identifying what would help students the most, and how the fund would be different than a regular scholarship in meeting student need.  The decision was made to create a fund that assists students who experience a financial emergency or unanticipated expenses causing short-term financial hardship that requires immediate attention to keep a student in college.  These financial emergencies often relate to housing, transportation, and medical bills.  This fund is designated to assist those who cannot reasonably resolve their financial difficulty through scholarships or other Financial Aid awards.

The next and ongoing phase has been fundraising to grow the impact and reach of this program.  The Dance Marathon, an annual student-organized event, was created to spread the word about the Student Emergency Grant Fund and to raise funds to benefit it.  Initially, gifts from the Sacramento State Alumni Association, the University Foundation at Sacramento State, organizations, and proceeds from some campus events also helped replenish the funds.

In 2017, the Student Emergency Grant program transformed.  Through the generous support of President Robert and Jody Nelsen, the Seth Nelsen Student Emergency Grant Endowment was established, providing the program with a reliable source of support.  While the endowment income provides a steady stream of funding, the generous support of individual donors has been instrumental in increasing the number of student emergency grants awarded each year, ensuring that unexpected financial emergencies do not become roadblocks on our students' path to graduation.

Mission

The University Foundation at Sacramento State promotes philanthropy to provide a level of excellence at the University beyond what is possible through state funds. The board of directors of The University Foundation accomplish this goal by helping to raise private resources that advance the mission and priorities of the University and serving as ambassadors for philanthropy in the University community.

Needs

- Expand annual funding for the Seth Nelsen Student Emergency Grant Fund to support the growing need for students facing unexpected financial obstacles, allowing them to remain enrolled and continue on the path to their degree.

- Increase the number of Student Emergency Grants awarded through Seth Nelsen Student Emergency Grant Fund and meet the rising need created by rapid escalation of cost of living.

- Increase total dollar amounts awarded to each student from the Student Emergency Grants to ensure financial obstacles can be fully surmounted.

- Invest additional funds into housing and food insecurity assistance programs for a holistic approach to meeting students' basic needs.

- Additional investment in Seth Nelsen Student Emergency endowment to ensure a reliable stream of funding for the Student Emergency Grant program.

Equity Statement

We aspire to be an inclusive and just community where each member feels a sense of belonging and a responsibility to foster that belonging. Applying an Antiracist and Inclusive framework, in conjunction with other initiatives such as the Anchor University, is one tool that will bring Sacramento State closer to building a just, diverse, equitable, and inclusive community where everyone belongs. We must interrogate our practices (both current and past) to hold ourselves accountable. This work does not reside in a single office but is a collective responsibility for the whole of the campus community. An embracement of our diversity will increase the vitality of the campus and help the University foster and strengthen our commitment to justice, equity, and inclusion for Sacramento State and the Sacramento Region.
