Sinfonia Spirituosa is a chamber orchestra dedicated to presenting bold, historically-informed performances on period instruments. Through vibrant, collegial exchange, the ensemble aspires to faithfully bring to life the broad spectrum of color, affect and rhetoric inherent in the music of the Baroque era. Their roster of strings, flute, oboe, bassoon, voice, harpsichord, organ, archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar allows for programing which displays an astonishingly wide variety of national styles and unique instrument combinations. The repertoire, which spans over 100 years of Baroque music, exemplifies the spontaneous, improvisatory character of this period, and showcases the startling, cosmopolitan harmonic language of the late 17th century, the rich complexity of the German baroque style, and the sumptuous textures and dramatic flair of the late French composers.

The members of Sinfonia Spirituosa lead multi-faceted careers as university professors, recording artists, soloists, conductors, chamber musicians and symphony players. They are active as teachers and performers on both period and modern instruments, and many are directors of their own ensembles specializing in early music, romantic music, new music, jazz and hot swing.

A central tenet of our vision is celebrating the music of the past while inspiring young musicians of the future. Through immersion in a creative rehearsal and performance environment, our Mentorship Program aims to stimulate and support promising high school, undergraduate, graduate, and young professional level instrumentalists and singers who are curious, open-minded, and committed to exploring original instruments and studying the musical language of the Baroque period.

Sinfonia Spirituosa is a chamber orchestra dedicated to presenting bold, historically-informed performances on period instruments. Needs

Thanks to your support, our 2024-25 concert season was a huge success! We were especially thrilled to add a third concert program in February, featuring Lorna Peters, Jubal Fulks, and George England. This program included a happy-hour concert of French baroque music sponsored by Alliance Française, a concert in Davis, where the trio was joined by the Davis High School Baroque Ensemble, and a concert at Trinity Cathedral with a lively Q&A session between the audience and the performers. It was your support that made it all possible! Since this third program was incredibly popular, we hope to make it a regular part of our season ~ please help us reach this goal!

In addition to this more intimate chamber concert, Sinfonia Spirituosa hopes to continue presenting two concert programs with the entire ensemble, including performances at Trinity Cathedral, where we are honored to be Artists-in-Residence. Depending upon the repertoire performed, the size of our ensemble ranges between 10 and 16 performers, with the cost of $16,000-$22,000 for each program. This includes artist fees, per diem, travel costs and housing for our non-local members, rental of rehearsal spaces and concert venues, van rental for moving the harpsichord, professional audio/video recording, and marketing such as fliers, posters, CapRadio spots, and ads on social media.

Having formed in 2018 (and then 2 years out during Covid) Sinfonia Spirituosa is still a “young” ensemble. We are on fire now, and we hope that you can hear it when we perform! Please help launch us into the next phase of our musical journey by joining our growing list of patrons that sustain our passionate commitment to education and professional historical performance!
