Sinfonia Spirituosa Inc

Sinfonia Spirituosa is a chamber orchestra dedicated to presenting bold, historically-informed performances on period instruments. Through vibrant, collegial exchange, the ensemble aspires to faithfully bring to life the broad spectrum of color, affect and rhetoric inherent in the music of the Baroque era. Their roster of strings, flute, oboe, bassoon, voice, harpsichord, organ, archlute, theorbo and baroque guitar allows for programing which displays an astonishingly wide variety of national styles and unique instrument combinations. The repertoire, which spans over 100 years of Baroque music, exemplifies the spontaneous, improvisatory character of this period, and showcases the startling, cosmopolitan harmonic language of the late 17th century, the rich complexity of the German baroque style, and the sumptuous textures and dramatic flair of the late French composers.

The members of Sinfonia Spirituosa lead multi-faceted careers as university professors, recording artists, soloists, conductors, chamber musicians and symphony players. They are active as teachers and performers on both period and modern instruments, and many are directors of their own ensembles specializing in early music, romantic music, new music, jazz and hot swing.

A central tenet of our vision is celebrating the music of the past while inspiring young musicians of the future. Through immersion in a creative rehearsal and performance environment, our Mentorship Program aims to stimulate and support promising high school, undergraduate, graduate, and young professional level instrumentalists and singers who are curious, open-minded, and committed to exploring original instruments and studying the musical language of the Baroque period.

Needs

Thanks to your support, the 2023-24 concert season was a success! Our October concerts in Sacramento and Grass Valley featured guest organist Dr. David Heller. Our most recent concerts, dedicated with love and gratitude to the memory of our longtime treasurer and supporter Carol Perrin, featured stunning performances by contralto Sara Couden and soprano Chea Kang.

To continue to bring professional performances to live audiences in California and beyond, our 2024-2025 fundraising campaign has two goals; to expand our season to three concert sets, and to have the financial security to plan farther into the future.

Sinfonia Spirituosa currently presents two concert sets each season, which include performances at Trinity Cathedral in Sacramento, where we are honored to be Artists-in-Residence. Depending upon the repertoire performed, the size of our ensemble ranges between 10 and 16 performers, with the cost of $15,000-$22,000 for each set. This includes artist fees, per diem, travel and housing for our non-local members, rental of rehearsal spaces and concert venues, van rental for moving the harpsichord, professional audio/video recording, and marketing such as fliers, posters, radio spots, and ads on social media.

Please join our growing list of patrons and help us sustain our passionate commitment to education and professional historical performance!
