Equity Statement

Women Of Color On The Move runs a substance abuse program whose component involves the reintegration of youth to re-enter the education system. In 2023, we managed to serve and work with 59 justice-impacted youth who had not graduated high school due to substance use. We found that young men of color are disproportionately likely to be disconnected from school and work. The disparities are driven by the interplay of gender, race, and inequities among the communities in which they grow up.

We developed a system that assisted in integrating them back into the education system. This system involved personalized support, academic counseling, and mentorship. Of the 59 we started with, 14 participants have completed a certificate program, while the rest have integrated back into secondary school. This has been achieved through a collaborative effort between community leaders, mentors, and teachers, who used the racial and gender equity lens and promoted cultural competence and sensitivity.

Our mentorship program incorporates rigor and academic support, nurturing relationships, college knowledge and access, relevance, youth-centered programming, and practical instruction from staff, mentors, and counselors.

We currently collaborate with various community partners. One of our most significant partners is the transition housing in Sacramento and the juvenile justice system, where we work with system-impacted youth to reduce recidivism.

We have also partnered with THE Growth Centre, a Californian nonprofit, in the 2023-2024 substance abuse program. In this program, students from communities of color receive a Male Leadership Coach who is highly trained in Social Emotional Learning and Leadership Development. In this phase, students commit to the program's core values, allowing them to examine both individual interpersonal and identity development. Students are immersed in an in-depth exploration of their identity, strengths, and what authentic leadership means. They learn and practice leadership skills throughout the year, culminating in a service project they have organized. Additionally, students take a deeper look at the principles of leadership and identify the relevance in their lives as the men they strive to become.

In the second phase of the program, we include intensive post-secondary and career support through career exploration activities, college visits, application preparation, and developing a post-graduation plan. This phase is grounded in surrounding young males with positive role models who share their identity and experience, helping them build confidence in their abilities and future potential.

Our organization needs comprehensive technical support in the following specific areas:

1. We require expert assistance with data analysis and management centered on enhancing community capacity. This includes ensuring compliance with the most recent privacy regulations.

2. Collaborative, participatory action research projects are essential to drive policy and system change.

3. We seek definitive guidance to complete the development of detailed local and regional blueprints.
