Big Idea Theatre (BIT) utilizes a uniquely democratic system of operating. No one owns Big Idea; instead, it is up to our members to determine the artistic vision and future of our company. Members are chosen for their impressive dedication to BIT and their proven skills in creating art. Company Members are 100% volunteer only and are responsible for selecting the shows in our season, electing our leadership, and for the day-to-day operations of the company.
Big Idea Theatre was formed in 2003 by a small group of founding members in Roseville. In 2007, the company was transformed under new management and in a new location. Since 2008, BIT has been situated at 1616 Del Paso Boulevard in Sacramento. Before COVID-19, we produce seven full-length main stage theatrical productions per year. In 2022 we are producing 4 full-length shows. The productions range from comedy to drama, and from classic to modern. We strive to provide our audiences with a wide-array of plays each year. Each of the productions are presented over the course of five weeks, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday evenings. In a single year, BIT captivates audiences for 105 performances.
Many current and former BIT collaborators have progressed to professional venues, such as Sacramento Theatre Company, Capital Stage, B Street Theatre, and Berkeley Repertory Theatre. Our dedication to creating a safe educational place allows new artists to take risks and try new ideas. BIT currently consists of 15-20 company members. Our members include current and former University students, attorneys, teachers, state workers, and artists from other fields. In addition, BIT's board consists of five members who meet on a regular basis to conduct all the corporate powers of the Company.
BIT is also dedicated to providing peer-based instruction in the Theatrical Arts. This training provides our artists and community members with instruction in acting, stage construction, lighting design, set design, costuming, make-up, direction, and theatre management. Our dedication gave rise to additional programming called 'A BIT More', which we hope will one day includes a variety of events, ranging from classes and workshops to live music and comedy to black box shows and staged readings.
All BIT performances are open to the general community. Auditions for all plays are open to the public and are held on a regular basis. Our admission prices range from $18-$22 for adults and $16-$20 for students/seniors/SARTA. As a gesture of our commitment to making the arts accessible to all, we offer tickets for just $12 to our Thursday shows. We also have a matinee performance on one Sunday of each show's run for only $15. Our season passes are just $95, which makes it possible to see seven main stage shows per year for just over $13 a ticket. BIT has been called 'Sacramento's Troupe on the Rise' by the Sacramento Bee and was voted best community theatre group by the readers of Sacramento News & Review for 8 consecutive years. Our shows have been also nominated for and received dozens of Elly Awards, which are bestowed on the best theatre accomplishments for any given year by Sacramento Area Regional Theatre Alliance (SARTA).
