The Chester Foundation has been providing emergency assistance to animal companions, and the families who love them, since its inception in 2010. The generosity of our donors has enabled this all-volunteer effort to cover all or a portion of the cost of emergency care for displaced and lost pets, supportive care for injured and sick animals, and matching funds to local veterinary clinics and other programs with similar missions. We understand that pet owners with financial hardships face painful decisions regarding their animal companions when an accident or emergency health issue arises. At the Chester Foundation, it's all about saving the animal - and while the response to our services from the Greater Sacramento region has been encouraging, the need for more resources continues to grow. In 2017, the number of animals served increased to 123 with 32 participating pet hospitals. We encourage veterinarians, animal rescue organizations, emergency response teams, and animal lovers to learn more about the Foundation and how we can work together by contacting info@chesterfound.org.
The Chester Foundation provides medical care for stray and disadvantaged pets. This all-volunteer foundation organizes collaborations with veterinary hospitals, animal rescue organizations and shelters to make sure that animal companions do not suffer simply because their owners cannot afford lifesaving veterinary services.
Emergency Veterinary Care Grants:
When a pet owner has no means to pay for the emergency services, Chester would like to be able to cover the entire cost. Thanks to our participating veterinarians and hospitals, services are provided at a discount to Chester beneficiaries. The range is approximately $200 to $3,000 depending on the injury (after discounts). We currently average 10 per month in this category and need to build our reserve for future cases.
Emergency Veterinary Care in Homeless Camps: The Chester Foundation is working with the Volunteers of America to distribute cold weather supplies, food, shelters, and medical supplies to veterinarians who regularly visit homeless camps. Since the veterinarians must take time away from their practices, it would be too great a burden to also provide the medicines and wound care supplies, so Chester handles that part of the service. The needs are great year-round, and we are so pleased to have a way to deliver care.
Coats and Winter Shelters for Pets: Our foundation launched a program last winter to collect gently used, hand made, or store bought water resistant coats for large and small dogs owned by the homeless. We also accept tarps and other necessities. They are distributed by veterinarians who provide services in homeless camps. We will collect the articles throughout the year to be ready for the next cold season. Agencies now recognize the importance of the human/animal bond, and have a winter shelter that allows the homeless to stay with their pets. Chester provides crates, straw for dog houses, collars, leashes, and other items and we assist when a mobile veterinary clinic goes to the shelter to provide spay and neuter services.
Free Veterinary Care for Animals of the Homeless: When we receive a call from an agency working with the homeless, or from a concerned citizen that an animal is sick or injured, we set up a veterinary appointment with a participating clinic to make sure the animal receives care. These referrals are time consuming to manage, but Chester covers related expenses of this service provided by volunteers.
Community Outreach: In order to make the community aware of our services, we participate in events that promote animal welfare. Funding is needed for hand-out materials to reach potential beneficiaries, veterinarians, and organizations who may partner with us, and shelters.
