Next Move Homeless Services

Empowering Lives. Ending Homelessness.

Since 1972, Next Move Homeless Services (formerly the Sacramento Area Emergency Housing Center) has been a vital lifeline for individuals and families experiencing homelessness in the Sacramento region. What began as a humble family shelter supporting just seven families has grown into a comprehensive support system serving an average of 600 people every day.

Our mission has always been rooted in compassion and transformation—originally focused on providing emergency shelter to help people out of homelessness. But as the needs of our community evolved, so did we.

Today, Next Move is much more than shelter. We offer a holistic array of programs designed to help people achieve lasting self-sufficiency and stability. From individualized success plans and self-sufficiency workshops to parenting support, mental and physical healthcare, employment readiness, and housing relocation assistance—we walk alongside our clients every step of the way.

Our services include:

  • Emergency Shelters & Transitional Housing

  • Permanent Supportive Housing

  • Life Skills & Budgeting Workshops

  • Health & Wellness Resources

  • Employment & Education Support

  • Community Resource Navigation

  • Shelter Diversion Services

Every day, we witness powerful transformations. Families reunited. Jobs secured. Keys to a new home placed in hands that once had none. With your support on this Big Day of Giving, we can continue to turn crisis into hope—and homelessness into self-reliance.

Together, we are changing lives.

Mission

The mission of Next Move Homeless Services is to help individuals and families with children achieve self-reliance.

Needs

Our Most Pressing Needs

Next Move Homeless Services is deeply committed to helping families and individuals move from crisis to stability—but we can’t do it without you.

Your support directly fuels the programs and services that transform lives. Every contribution, large or small, goes straight into housing, feeding, and empowering our most vulnerable neighbors.

🌟 Top Priority: Program Funding:

Emergency Family Shelter:

Next Move’s Emergency Family Shelter provides a safe, supportive environment for families with minor children who are experiencing homelessness. The shelter includes 20 private units, each offering families their own space to heal and regroup and is one of the only family shelters that allows men to remain with their family in the shelter. In addition to three nutritious meals served daily, families receive access to comprehensive case management, youth services, and housing support. Our goal is not only to provide emergency shelter, but also to empower families with the resources and guidance they need to transition into stable, long-term housing.

Francis House Center:

Francis House Center, located in Sacramento’s Promise Zone, serves over 1,000 clients each month, offering vital day services to individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness. As the front-facing program of Next Move Homeless Services, Francis House provides access to essential resources including hygiene kits, clothing, snacks, a computer lab, bus passes, and rental and utility assistance. Clients can also receive free California IDs, $10 eyeglasses, and other support services that remove barriers to stability and self-reliance. Francis House is often the first step on a client’s journey toward hope, dignity, and long-term housing solutions.

Your donation ensures these programs remain open, staffed, and fully resourced to serve the growing number of individuals and families in need.

Equity Statement

Our Commitment to Equity

At Next Move Homeless Services, equity is at the heart of everything we do.

We are dedicated to building an inclusive, just, and compassionate community where every individual—regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or background—has the opportunity to thrive.

We acknowledge that systemic inequality and discrimination continue to disproportionately affect marginalized communities, especially those experiencing homelessness. That’s why we’re committed to breaking down barriers and addressing these disparities head-on through our services, policies, and community partnerships.

We work every day to ensure that all individuals—particularly those from historically underrepresented and underserved populations—are treated with dignity, respect, and fairness, and have full access to the support they need to rebuild their lives.

Equity isn’t just a principle we stand by—it’s a practice we live out. We are continuously listening, learning, and evolving to ensure our work reflects our values and our vision: a stronger, more inclusive community where everyone has the tools and support to succeed.

Because equity isn’t optional—it’s essential
