$5,000 Goal

Pathways to Employment was established in 2017 as a nonprofit organization dedicated to empowering adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) through comprehensive skills training and support services. Our mission is to equip individuals with the tools they need for full-time employment while fostering social inclusion, independence, and a sense of community.

We take a holistic approach to improving employment opportunities, support systems, and outcomes for adults with IDD. By emphasizing one-on-one support staff-to-student engagement and welcoming individuals with severe disabilities, we ensure that everyone, regardless of ability level, is given the opportunity to thrive. At Pathways to Employment, we believe in the inherent potential of all individuals and are committed to driving social change by promoting inclusion and independence.

The Need for Our Work

Adults with IDD face significant challenges, including ongoing care needs, limited employment opportunities, and social isolation. In the United States, over 7 million individuals have IDD, with approximately 615,000 residing in California. The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS) provides critical support to this population through a network of 21 Regional Centers, which collectively serve about 400,000 individuals.

The Alta Regional Center, serving the Sacramento region, supports over 30,000 individuals with IDD. Despite its efforts and partnerships with more than 2,000 service providers (including Pathways to Employment), there is still a considerable service gap—particularly for adults with severe developmental disabilities. Many service providers face waitlists and struggle with inadequate staff-to-client ratios, leaving a vulnerable population underserved.

Our Journey and Impact

Pathways to Employment began in 2017 with small but meaningful initiatives, such as operating concession stands at local soccer games. These stands were staffed by volunteer students with IDD, including those with autism, from nearby schools. That same year, our clients began creating handmade items to enhance sales and develop valuable skills.

Since then, we have significantly expanded our programs. With a 2,500-square-foot office in Fair Oaks, we now offer fee-based classes that focus on physical fitness, cooking, arts and crafts, and employment training. This permanent space allows us to serve more clients more frequently, building a foundation for their long-term success.

Programs and Services

Our Employment Skills Training Program equips young adults with developmental disabilities with the practical skills needed to succeed in the workforce. Through hands-on experience in real-world settings, clients gain valuable job training, such as:

  • Paper Shredding Service: Weekly opportunities to develop office-related skills.
  • Pop-Up Stands: Direct sales experience, including handling transactions, customer service, and product management.
  • Coffee Cart Service: Training in order-taking, beverage preparation, and payment processing.
  • Community Engagement: Volunteering at local libraries, food banks, the SPCA, and participating in small businesses like laundry and dog-walking services.

In 2024, we expanded our classes to include:

  • Hospitality Training: Focused on restaurant operations.
  • Gardening Classes: Teaching plant propagation and care.
  • Construction Skills Training: Hands-on instruction in basic construction techniques.

These programs not only build skills but also provide clients with a sense of purpose and belonging, helping them integrate into the workforce and their communities.

Looking Ahead

Our work focuses on individuals with high-intensity needs—a population often overlooked despite their immense potential. Recruiting and training skilled staff is critical to our success, as we aim to address the service gaps in our region.

In 2025, our goal is to expand our reach, diversify our client base, and continue creating pathways to employment for more adults with IDD. To achieve this, we seek financial support from individuals, corporations, and community partners. Your generosity will directly impact the lives of those we serve, helping them achieve independence, purpose, and dignity.

Together, we can build a more inclusive workforce and community where everyone has the opportunity to succeed, regardless of their abilities.

Mission

Pathways to Employment provides a sense of purpose, community and independence to developmentally disabled adults through employment, life and social skills training.

Equity Statement

At Pathways to Employment, we are committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in all aspects of our organization. We recognize that individuals with developmental disabilities face unique challenges in accessing education, employment, and other opportunities, and we are committed to breaking down these barriers.

We believe that a diverse and inclusive workforce is essential to our success and the success of our clients. We are committed to providing an environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all individuals, regardless of their race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion, disability, or other identities. We believe that our differences are what make us strong, and we strive to create a culture of respect and understanding where everyone feels valued and supported.

Our commitment to DEI is reflected in our programs and services. We strive to provide individualized support that meets the unique needs of each client, recognizing that everyone has different abilities and strengths. We also partner with employers and organizations that share our commitment to DEI, and we work to create inclusive workplaces that value diversity and provide opportunities for all.

We are committed to ongoing education and training to deepen our understanding of DEI issues and promote greater awareness and understanding among our staff, clients, and community. We also welcome feedback and input from our clients, families, and stakeholders to help us improve our programs and services and ensure that we are meeting the needs of everyone we serve.

At Pathways to Employment, we believe that everyone has the right to access education, employment, and other opportunities, and we are committed to working towards a more equitable and inclusive society for all.
