Founded in 2017 by Sam Catalano, the mission of the Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento is to build a pipeline of support for LGBTQ+ youth and young adults, emphasizing education and civic engagement. Initially offering a single scholarship at Sacramento State University, in eight years, the foundation has since established four additional scholarships providing more than $100,000 to dozens of high school and college students. Additionally, the foundation has convened local educational agencies to discuss best practices for supporting LGBTQ+ youth, sponsored student-led leadership conferences, and sponsored internsihps at local mental health providers with experience supporting LGBTQ+ individuals. The Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento is committed to extending support to LGBTQ youth and young adults in pursuit of equity for all.

Giving Activity

Mission

The Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento fosters leadership and supports high school and college students in the Sacramento region who will be the next generation of leaders advancing equity and representation in the LGBTQ+ community. The Foundation accomplishes this through scholarships, fostering collaboration between Sacramento schools to better support LGBTQ+ students, and partnering with local entities to expand mental health services available to youth.

Needs

In 2025 the Stonewall Foundation of Greater Sacramento will fund a total of five scholarships:

- Laurie McBride Scholarships for Sacramento State University

- Sam Catalano Scholarships for Los Rios Community College

- Charlene Jones Scholarship for San Juan Unified School District seniors

- Prism Scholarships for San Juan Unified School District students

- Black History Month Scholarships for Sacramento students

Additionally, the Foundation will continue it's work with school districts and community partners to:

- Sponsor the Be Brave, Be You LGBTQ+ student leadership conferences in the Sacramento City Unified School District

- Sponsor the PRIDE PAK education conference at the San Juan Unified School District, and the Elk Grove Unified School District's Stars Student Summit.

- Fund additional interns through the Sunburst Projects aiming to become counselors with clinical competency to treat LGBTQ individuals.
