Investing In Dreams

One of the highlights of the Soroptimist year is the day we write checks to women who are supporting their families and going to school. 

SI Davis awarded 4 women with a total of $12,000 in Live Your Dream grants. Shatovia was the top recipient, and received $5,000 from SI Davis. She was selected by the Sierra Nevada Region to receive an additional award of $3,000. 

Shatovia lives in Davis and is raising her 3 young children on her own, homeschools her daughter, and made the President’s List at Sierra College for academic excellence. Her tenacity and dedication to her educational goal to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner and to her three young children is reason enough to recognize her as an exceptional community member. But she was chosen by SI Davis and the Sierra Nevada Region of Soroptimist Clubs as a Live Your Dream grant award recipient because of her perseverance and her resilience overcoming a lifetime of adversity. She lost her children’s father in an unsolved homicide, suffered serious complications during her pregnancy, and struggled with mental health and ongoing physical issues postpartum. 

While she appreciates the money that comes with the award, Shatovia says her experience with SI Davis and the Live Your Dream committee is “worth everything to me”. She plans to use the award to replace home furnishings damaged in a recent move.
