Ikaika joined hula at the beginning of 2024 when he turned 5. In the two years prior to joining, he often came to classes with his mom, attended hālau events and was always welcomed by the aunties and uncles that met him. He is Autistic and doesn't always "fit" in neurotypical spaces, but the hālau and keiki class has helped him strengthen his listening skills, ability to follow directions and create pilina that he otherwise would not have gotten the opportunity to learn. He has minimal verbal skills for his age, but in the hālau he is given space to practice chanting and singing with his peers. Kumu and all of his hula aunties and cousins show him so much grace and patience. We do not take the aloha given to him by the people in our hālau lightly. The two of us would appreciate any support our family and friends can give to this great organization. Mahalo!
