Why I Volunteer
I’ve proudly served on the IMCS Board of Directors since 2012, and in that time, one thing has remained painfully clear: despite Sacramento having one of the largest Iu Mien communities in the United States, we are still largely invisible. To this day, I regularly get asked, “What is Mien?” That constant question—and the frustration of being unseen—prompted me to become an advocate for my community.
Even now, resources for the Iu Mien—especially our elders—are extremely limited. That reality pushed me to realize that if we want to shine a light on our culture and our people, we must be the ones to make the change.
Thirteen years ago, I never imagined how deeply I’d become involved with the Iu Mien community in Sacramento. I served as Board President for five years and continue to serve on the board today. Along the way, I’ve met incredible and compassionate community leaders, connected with inspiring Mien youth and elders, and built lifelong friendships that continue to inspire my work everyday.
Iu Mien Community Services (IMCS) is the only nonprofit organization in the Greater Sacramento Region solely dedicated to serving the Iu Mien community with programs that specifically meet the mental health and social service needs of our Iu Mien families.
With the dedication of our staff, board, community partners, and volunteers, IMCS provides culturally responsive programs that:
- Support elders with vital social and mental health services
- Empower youth through education, mentorship, and leadership development
- Preserve Iu Mien language, traditions, and cultural heritage
- Address intergenerational challenges
- Help our community members thrive and succeed—while staying true to our roots
