70 Years of Life Without Limits

Since our founding on March 21,1955, we have remained committed to empowering individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities, breaking down barriers, and fostering a more inclusive community.

Over the past seven decades, UCP has evolved significantly. What began as a small support network has grown into a thriving organization that serves thousands of individuals and families each year.

During the first few years of operation, UCP opened a day care center for children with disabilities. UCP provided five scholarships for speech and physical therapy, with private drivers or taxis providing transportation. Parents paid 25 cents a day to cover expenses.

We have expanded our programs since then to include purchasing the first UCP building in 1965, adding UCP’s first van in 1969 by collecting one million S&H Stamps, adding in-home respite care in the 1970s, supporting individuals in community living arrangement services in 1982, and establishing the Foundation for UCP of Sacramento and Northern California in 2009, and so much more.

Today UCP provides 13 programs through four program divisions; transportation; a fleet of 63 vehicles, Family Respite Services; 880 part-time respite workers, 7 adult day programs serving 350 participants every workday; and Recreation; including camps. Thanks to the dedication of our team and the generosity of our community, we have continually adapted to meeting the changing needs of those we serve.

A key focus for UCP moving forward is ensuring the sustainability of our mission. With increasing demand for our services, we are investing in innovative programs, expanding partnerships, and strengthening our financial foundation to ensure we can continue to provide life-changing support for generations to come. Our commitment to sustainability means not only securing funding but also leveraging technology and community engagement to enhance our impact.
