As a board member of the Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California (MCCNC), I have personally experienced the value of its mission to preserve California’s Mexican heritage by fostering the cultural, artistic and historical legacy of Mexico. The many events held annually focused on the arts, history and education, illustrate the importance of the mission.

In February at the "Dia de la Bandera" I've seen the excitement of fourth graders touring the historical Sutter Fort for the first time and the pride they feel when reading their essays on what the Mexican Flag means to them. The event provides the students with a lesson on early California and Mexican history as well as the important role of Sacramento played in its development.

During the "Steps to College" educational fair, it is so rewarding to see hundreds of Latino high school students who aspire to attend college. Over fifty universities and community Colleges also participate by offering the students important college application and financial information.   It is so encouraging to see all these motivated students planning for their future.

The Reina Fiestas Patria event offers college women the opportunity to receive training in public speaking, creativity, and leadership skills. Watching the contestants empowered with a new sense of confidence is very rewarding.   The "Reina" and two "Princesa" finalists are awarded a scholarship and serve as good will ambassadors for a year.  Watching the young women grow and mature gives me a sense of pride and optimism for their future and what they will accomplish.

Perhaps the most rewarding event held by the MCCNC in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate, Cien Amigos and Cien Amigos Education Fund is the IME Scholarship Award Ceremony. Together they have provided over one million dollars in scholarships since 2012 to hundreds of deserving low-income Latino students from the Sacramento Region.   During this event, you can see the pride of the parents and the gratitude of the students. For many of them, receiving the scholarship is the key for them to attend higher education and open their future.

Please help me to raise funds to continue the important work of the Mexican Cultural Center of Northern California.
