A Journey Through Generations

My love affair with trains began in a Chicago basement, where Christmas magic happened each year. As children, my siblings and I would watch with mounting excitement as "the elves" (our Mom and Dad) secretly constructed an elaborate model train layout beneath a mysterious blanket. Each morning we'd discover changes to the model railroad town being built beneath the old Army blanket. Then, on Christmas Day the full wonder was revealed. Those hours spent watching trains circle the track weren't just play; they were the foundation of lifelong memories and family connections.

This passion for trains, passed down from my father and grandfather, found a perfect match when I came to work at the CSRM Foundation. Walking through the Museum doors, I felt the same childlike wonder I experienced in our Chicago basement all those years ago. 

Since then, I've watched young visitors’ eyes widen with amazement at the massive locomotives. For these children, the Museum isn't just about old trains – it's a spark that could inspire them to invent the next revolutionary transportation system or solve other mobility challenges.

For older visitors, the Museum offers something equally valuable: a connection to cherished memories and simpler times. My mom recently visited with her "crew" from their Assisted Living community. They were on Cloud Nine! It was so much fun to experience through their eyes.

On May 1st, 2025, during the Big Day of Giving, I'm asking you to join me in supporting this remarkable institution. Your donation helps:

• Provide subsidized transportation for school field trips, bringing over 100,000 students to the Museum this year
• Preserve and restore historical artifacts that might otherwise be lost to time
• Create interactive exhibits that make learning exciting and accessible
