Encouraging collaboration, celebrating diversity, & raising marginalized voices in community theatre

Prior to 2020, the Sacramento theatre community primarily knew us for one program - the Elly Awards.  While that was all well and good, most folks didn't know about the other services we offered in support of the community.  This fact, coupled with our self-reflection during the mandated pause of the pandemic, lead us to two conclusions: 1) The Elly Awards had become problematic and counter to our mission; 2) We need to be doing more to celebrate the diversity within our community and provide opportunities for new voices and theatres to bring new perspectives, ideas, and works to the table.

As a result, in the past two years we've launched THREE new programs!

1) Youth Educational Scholarships (YES) - our YES program provides funding for youth theater artists to attend theatre workshops/camps/classes, where they may not have otherwise been able to.  We have awarded 6 scholarships so far and with your help, we can bring the arts to many more.

2) Tonight Starring! - This program lets actors and/or directors present a stage reading of a production in a manner that is contrary to traditional staging; a role that you wouldn't normally have been cast in; directing choices that might not be typical of such a production, etc.  This program allows artists to present new ideas and works to elevate the voices of marginalized communities who otherwise have rather few opportunities in the Sacramento region.

3) Micro-grants - Our newest program, these micro-grants will help community theatres and artists produce new works of their own. Our first grant was awarded just last month - stay tuned to hear the results!

This organization has meant a lot to me over the years.  While our priorities still work to support our community theatres, we are working to bring more production opportunities to the community as well.  But I'm not gonna lie, we are struggling.  We need donors; we need time; we need support.  We need YOU to help us build a bigger, more inclusive community of theatres, artists, technicians, and patrons alike.  Please, pretty pretty please, consider joining me in supporting SARTA on this Big Day of Giving!

Special thanks to the Sacramento Odd Fellows Lodge #2 for their generous support!
