BREATHE started way back in 1917 as The Sacramento Society for the Prevention and Cure of Tuberculosis.
From working toward the prevention and cure of Tuberculosis, to engaging local youth to eliminate tobacco’s influence as well as monitor and mitigate air pollution in our communities.
One of BREATHE’s proudest accomplishments is our role in the passage of Proposition 99 a tobacco tax increase that funds prevention programs and ordinances prohibiting smoking in public spaces.
We continue to work toward smoke free lungs for all through our tobacco free screens program and Youth Advisory Board!
Intrepid supporters began raising funds trekking through the Sierras. Today, families are invited to participate in our annual Bike Festival in the spring. Participants can learn and practice riding safely and enjoy a family-friendly outing with giveaways and activities.
BREATHE was instrumental in phasing out rice straw burning in the Sacramento Valley in 1991. Today BREATHE helps to improve air quality by advocating for electric vehicle usage in Sacramento.
December is Founder’s Month, so we are celebrating our history, while asking you to support our continuing effort to fight for healthy lungs in the Sacramento region!
